In today's philosophical conflict of reason vs. mysticism: Who are the main advocates on each side? What are their key ideas? What social actions are they taking to win?

To all who admired Burgess Laughlin, I'm sorry to say he has passed away. Please find his obituary message on his main website:
I welcome all pertinent comments and questions from readers who follow my strict rules of etiquette. I will not publish improper comments. If your screen name is not your first and last real name, be sure to include your name -- first and last -- in the body of your comment. Example acceptable forms of a name are: Burgess Laughlin; B. Laughlin; and Burgess L. or something similar that would be recognizable. The burden is on you to identify yourself.
What is the state of today's philosophical war between reason and mysticism? The purpose of The Main Event is to prepare to answer that theme question by gathering and organizing facts--not by debating the issue itself, which readers can do in other forums. The intended audience includes advocates of reason who might use this weblog as a resource: (1) philosophical activists focused on the reason vs. mysticism debate; and (2) intellectual activists engaged in specialized debates--for example, theory of evolution vs. creationism--that are proxies for the reason/mysticism debate. Comments that help answer or clarify the theme questions are welcome from advocates of mysticism and advocates of reason.
Comment Etiquette
1. Identify yourself.
2. Address ideas not other commenters.
3. Write objectively: accurately, clearly, concisely, and respectfully.
4. Do not debate reason vs. mysticism.
See the August 24, 2009 post for detailed etiquette. Always copy your comment before you publish it.
